Monkey Temple

£65.00

An ancient temple complex that sits atop a hill overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, west of Kathmandu city in Nepal, Swayambhunath is also known as the Monkey Temple due to the resident holy monkeys that live in the north-west structures. Holy because when Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom and learning, was raising the hill he was supposed to leave his hair short but grew it long, attracting head lice, which it is said transformed into these monkeys. While this legend doesn’t conjure up the most beautiful of images, the place itself and the view from the top is amazing.
